There are countless folks who think that fostering is just a way of trying out a dog to see if it’s a good match for their home.  Many organizations have such a thing and they call it foster to adopt.  However, the real power in fostering occurs when you become a resource for many dogs over the years.

As soon as you start fostering you will probably begin to hear comments like “you have to keep this one!  It’s too cute!” and “How can you possibly give this one up?”  So before you begin, let’s set our resolve and talk about why foster is the gift that keeps on giving.

It’s OK to be Sad

You can absolutely be sad, you may even cry when you say goodbye, but sending a foster dog to an adoptive home should be a happy celebration too! Nothing outweighs the joy of knowing you helped save a life (or a whole litter of lives), and because you got your foster dog to an adoptive home, you can now foster another pup in need! Focus on and share the happiness with others so those who might encourage you to keep every foster dog can learn more about why you foster and support your efforts.

You may decide to adopt your foster, but only you can decide if that’s what you want. No one will be upset if you do, but others should not pressure you or impact your decision.

You Can Often Stay In Touch

One of our favorite parts of fostering is the extended family you develop as you stay connected with many of the adopters that welcomed your former fosters into their families.  The joy of getting a new photo or pupdate will help remind you that you made the right decision in letting go and opening your heart and home to a new doggo in need.

Foster Homes Are a Renewable Resource

One of the best ways to get over the sadness of saying goodbye, is to find another pet to help!  Whether you are doing short term weekend fostering or marketing your fosters all the way to adoption

If You Want to Keep Your New Friend, No One Will Be Mad If You Adopt

Nobody is going to be upset if you adopt a shelter dog.  Everyone should adopt a shelter dog!  Make sure you communicate with the rescue or shelter you are fostering for if you do decide to go this way.  You’ll need to understand their adoption process and likely have to follow it like everyone else.
